Developing a Global Citizenship Programme

Based on First Hand Experiences

A team from Park Road Academy Primary School joined Hope for Justice in Uganda during the February half-term 2020. Hope for Justice exists to bring an end to modern slavery by preventing exploitation, rescuing victims, restoring lives and reforming society. The team spent a week in Uganda, not just observing what happens out there; but being actively involved in the projects. Using the skills they have developed within education and working with children, their aim was to deliver high quality training to teachers and offer hands-on practical experiences for children to engage in. In addition, they had the opportunity to visit communities, in the most rural areas, to help understand the complex and hidden challenges that face families. The experience will help the team to develop a high quality global citizenship programme.

Global Citizenship Team

Our Global Citizenship Team have been working tirelessly to raise awareness for multiple fundraising events throughout the year. The team help deliver whole school assemblies to raise awareness for important, memorable days as well as championing children's rights and educating their peers on what this entails.

Fire Service Visit - May 2025 🚒

Pupils at Park Road Academy recently welcomed a visit from the local fire service, who delivered an engaging session on water safety. The children learnt important life-saving tips, including how to stay safe near open water and what to do in an emergency. This visit not only helped develop practical safety awareness but also linked to our focus on global citizenship—encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and to look out for others in their community and beyond.

Earth Day - April 2025 🌍

To celebrate Earth Day, pupils at Park Road Academy took part in a variety of activities focused on protecting our planet. From planting seeds and litter-picking to creating artwork from recycled materials, children learned about the importance of caring for the environment. These hands-on experiences helped them understand how small actions can make a big difference—nurturing a sense of global responsibility and encouraging them to become eco-conscious citizens of the future.

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel Week - March 2025🚲

Children showed their enthusiasm for fitness and sustainability by walking, cycling, and scooting to school. This active travel initiative encouraged healthy lifestyles while also promoting eco-friendly choices that support a greener future.

Safer Internet Day - February 2025 💻

Safer Internet Day 2025 focused on the theme "Too good to be true? "Protecting yourself and others from scams online." This theme emphasised online scams and how young people can protect themselves from them. It was an excellent day for the children as they were able to participate in an assembly, lessons and workshops.

NSPCC Rocks 🎸 - February 2025 🎸

Pupils at Park Road Academy became rockstars for the day as part of a fun-filled NSPCC fundraiser! Dressed in their best rock ‘n’ roll outfits, the children raised money to support the vital work of the NSPCC while learning about the importance of speaking out and staying safe. The event was a fantastic mix of music, energy, and awareness—empowering pupils to be confident, kind, and courageous, just like real-life rockstars for change!

Festive Jumper Day - December 2024 🎄

Thanks to our pupils proudly wearing their favourite festive knits and the incredible generosity of families across the Park Road Academy community, we’ve successfully raised funds for a worthy charity. It’s truly heartwarming to know that, even during challenging times, we’ve come together to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Odd Socks Day - November 2024 🧦

To mark Anti-Bullying Week, pupils and staff at Park Road Academy wore odd socks—a simple yet powerful symbol of individuality. This gesture sparked meaningful discussions among the children about the importance of embracing uniqueness. Through exploring themes of diversity and inclusion, students gained a deeper understanding of why celebrating our differences is essential in becoming positive role models and responsible global citizens.

Harvest Festival - October 2024 🍂🎃

Throughout October, we have been actively collecting a wide range of donations—including canned and dried foods, as well as essential hygiene products—for Wythenshaw Food Bank. We believe that everyone has the right to have their basic needs met, including access to nutritious food. We're incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by our school community, and we’re proud that these contributions will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
