Welcome to the Park Road Academy Primary School PE Page!

At Park Road Academy Primary School, we believe that physical education is a vital component of a well-rounded education. Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire and engage children in a variety of physical activities, promoting fitness, teamwork, and a lifelong love of sport.

On this page, you will find information about our exciting PE curriculum - for more information about the various sports and activities our pupils participate in, please head to the 'Extra-Curricular' page under the 'School Life' tab.

Whether it’s in the hall or out on the field, our goal is to support every child in achieving their personal best and developing a healthy, active lifestyle.

PE Curriculum

At Park Road Academy, we recognise Physical Education as a vital component of our curriculum, providing essential opportunities for every child to engage in a diverse range of activities and sports both within the school and beyond. Each pupil benefits from the opportunity to have 60 minutes of physical activity daily, to help foster active and healthy lifestyles. Our PE curriculum is designed to be inclusive and varied, encouraging all children to participate in every lesson and offering a broad spectrum of activities to support their physical and personal development.

Park Road Academy offers a number of extracurricular clubs that involve various sports across a range of ages for all abilities. Park Road Academy also attend numerous inter-school sporting events across the local area of Altrincham and Trafford that enable all children with sporting talent and those keen to participate to compete at an inter-school level. Each year the entire school puts on a Sports Week that allows children to earn points for their house teams participating and competing in a number of athletic events suitable for their age group, before a traditional Sports Day is held at the end of the week for parents and carers to attend for EYFS, KS1 and KS2.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In EYFS at Park Road Academy, physical development and movement are integral to our curriculum. Our curriculum focusses on enhancing children's gross motor skills through engaging activities that teach them to control their movements with care and confidence. This approach helps them navigate their environment safely and develop spatial awareness. We promote independence through a variety of PE units, including ball skills, movement exploration, yoga, dance, and athletics. Additionally, children enjoy access to diverse resources such as climbing equipment, bicycles, scooters, and building materials, fostering a love for active play and holistic growth.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, pupils develop a broad range of fundamental skills through our PE curriculum. Our offer includes activities such as fundamental movement skills, dance, gymnastics, yoga, invasion games, target games, and tri-golf. We aim to create a comfortable environment where every child can feel confident in PE lessons while striving to reach their personal best. Assessments in PE encompass various aspects, including skill performance, social development, and competitive elements, ensuring a well-rounded approach to each child’s physical education journey.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children enhance a diverse array of skills and techniques, preparing them for participation in a more competitive sporting environment. Our curriculum covers a wide range of activities, including dance, gymnastics, striking and fielding, invasion games with a focus on attacking and defending strategies, and outdoor adventurous activities . Children are assessed on various aspects, including skill performance, social development, and competitive involvement. Within PE lessons, they apply these skills in mini-competitions, competing within Park Road houses — Dunham, Heaton, Lyme, and Tatton — fostering teamwork, healthy competition, and a sense of community.

Key Stage 2

In Years 4 and 5, pupils receive weekly swimming lessons for six months of the year at either Altrincham or Sale Leisure Centre , facilitated by Trafford Leisure Swimming. Detailed swimming statistics are available in our Sports Premium Report annually. Additionally, Year 6 children participate in a comprehensive personal safety course provided by Judo Education, alongside a Bikeability course conducted by Trafford Local Authority. In some year groups in Key Stage 2, children also have lessons in PE provided by qualified and specialist sports coaches from Sale Sharks and Trafford Handball. These programs are designed to enhance water safety, personal security, and cycling proficiency, contributing to the well-rounded development of our pupils.

Extra-Curricular Teams, Clubs & Events

Park Road Academy provides a diverse range of extra-curricular activities for children of all ages. Our specialist sports sessions, led by Miss Garner, Timperley Lacrosse and Altrincham Football Club include a variety of options. Altrincham FC run both KS1 and LKS2 football clubs weekly, while netball sessions are available at various points in the year for KS2 pupils. Our Year 5 & 6 Friday Football club remains a favourite, welcoming both boys and girls and running year-round.

We collaborate with the ABCD School of Dance and Drama to offer engaging street dance and drama sessions for KS1 and KS2. The highlight of the summer term is our annual Quidditch competition, where Park Road houses compete for the coveted House Cup, fostering teamwork and school spirit.

Extra-Curricular Teams, Clubs & Events

In Key Stage 2, pupils have the opportunity to participate in local sports events with other schools through the Trafford Schools Sports Partnership. Our football teams practice every Friday to prepare for these competitions. We have also been represented in a variety of local sports competitions, such as bowling (SEND), dance, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, cricket and more!

We also offer Year 5 children the chance to join the Trafford Sports Leadership Academy annually. This program provides a qualification in leading and delivering sports sessions to younger primary school children. Graduates of this program, along with Year 6 participants, become our Sports Leaders, responsible for conducting sports sessions during lunchtimes, thereby fostering leadership skills and enhancing the school’s sporting culture.
