Reading Practice in Key Stage 2
Our Key Stage 2 reading programme is designed to empower children to become strong, confident, and successful readers. The programme focuses on developing key reading skills and strategies aligned with reading domains, ensuring a clear progression of texts. It uses engaging extracts from books available in the Class Bookshops, allowing pupils to explore a variety of literature.
The programme follows this structure:
Before diving into the main text, we prepare the children through discussions about similar texts, themes, and relevant vocabulary. This step builds a foundation and sets the context, encouraging pupils to engage more deeply with the reading material.
We read the text as a group, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to follow along. Throughout the reading, we check for understanding and encourage children to express whether they enjoyed the text or not, fostering a love for reading.
After reading, we delve into the themes presented in the text, allowing pupils to explore them in greater detail. This helps to broaden their comprehension and develop critical thinking skills.
At this stage, we focus on honing specific reading skills. Through modelling and guided practice, pupils learn strategies that enhance their reading proficiency, including comprehension, inference, and analysis.
To conclude the cycle, we incorporate a related activity or introduce a new text that connects with the themes or skills covered. This reinforces learning and encourages continued exploration.
Our reading programme is committed to nurturing a lifelong love of reading by providing pupils with the tools and strategies they need to thrive.
